Defensive Driving Tips

When you use defensive driving techniques, you have the best chances of staying safe on the road, even if the unexpected should occur.

Read on to learn how to utilize defensive driving practices.

Driving Defensively

The following techniques will help you stay safe on the road:

Be Alert

You can’t be prepared for unexpected occurrences on the road if you’re not alert. Always be sure to get enough sleep before driving. Additionally, make sure you’ve eaten enough. Being tired or hungry can cause your reaction times to slow down significantly.

Be Focused

When you’re driving, your focus should be on the road, and the road alone. Don’t allow your distractions to overcome your focus for the road. Keep your phone away so you aren’t tempted to check notifications. Keep pets and children in the back seat at all times.

Leave Plenty of Space

The unexpected can occur at any time. That’s why it’s so important to always leave an adequate distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you.

A good rule to follow is to leave one car lengths distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you for every 10 miles per hour (mph) of speed you’re traveling. For instance, if you’re going 40 mph, you should leave at least four car lengths between your car and the one in front of you. When driving in wet or snowy weather, you should double the recommended driving distance.

Never Drive in Someone’s Blind Spot

While you should never drive in anyone’s blind spot, this is particularly important when driving near large vehicles. If you need to pass a truck, do so in such a way that you won’t be driving in their blind spots for very long. It’s never a good idea to camp out in anyone’s blind spot, but it’s especially dangerous to drive in large trucks’ blind spots.
